A little Hollywood glamour. A generous helping of British humour. And a few familiar cinematic moments taking wonderfully unexpected turns.
Kate Silverwood’s Cinematic Pop Art Collection I brings together her love of film, storytelling and playful escapism in a collection of acrylic-on-canvas paintings. Drawing on the atmosphere of much-loved films, each scene introduces a new setting, an unlikely predicament or a mischievous twist.
There’s romance, adventure and just enough chaos to make you look twice.
From the cinema to the canvas
As the owner of the Red Carpet Cinema, Kate has long brought people together through film and food. Painting has opened another way to entertain—and another place for her imagination to wander.
The collection grew from a difficult period and nights spent awake at 3 a.m. Kate picked up a paintbrush and found a distraction that soon became something much more absorbing. Over months of painting, a sense of boldness, spirit and mischief began to emerge.
Those qualities run through Collection I. Its characters might find themselves in rather inconvenient circumstances, but there’s always room for humour, glamour or a carefully protected drink.
Familiar films, unexpected stories
In Sinking In The Rain, the carefree spirit of Singin’ in the Rain meets a flooded Venice. An umbrella dance becomes a joyful refusal to let rising water spoil the moment, with glowing lamplight reflected across the scene.
Some Like It Yacht takes the comic glamour of Some Like It Hot onto the Venetian canals. Two extravagantly dressed jazz musicians attempt to travel in style with feathers, cocktails and a saxophone—aboard a boat that somebody really should have ordered in a larger size.
Closer to home, Shaun of the Beer Garden turns a quiet evening at the pub into a matter of survival. Beneath fairy lights and hanging baskets, two friends defend their table from approaching zombies while remaining admirably committed to saving their pints.
The collection also offers a glimpse of what’s coming next. Currently at the preliminary pencil-sketch stage, Licence to Queue brings classic spy-film sophistication to a seaside fish-and-chip shop. A dinner-jacketed agent waits patiently for his supper while a traffic warden takes an interest in his prized car.
Colour, texture and character
Rich colour and expressive acrylic brushwork give the finished paintings their energy. Warm amber light meets deep teal shadows, while raised paint details bring texture to water, clothing, flowers and faces.
Look beyond the central characters and smaller stories begin to appear: a precariously balanced martini, an anxious sideways glance or a packet of crisps that remains essential despite the circumstances.
These details invite you to linger—and perhaps invent an ending of your own.
A moment to escape
At the heart of Kate’s work is the adventurous imagination that carries on beneath everyday life. We might be driving to work, emptying the dishwasher or heading into a meeting, while our thoughts are somewhere far more extraordinary.
Cinematic Pop Art Collection I makes room for that spirit. It’s an invitation to smile, recognise a familiar influence and enjoy seeing where the story goes next.
